Let’s begin with the bombshell that millions of authors are missing out on hundreds, thousand, millions, or even billions of $’s, £’s, or the equivalent currency each year. Yes that much. How I hear you ask? Well, through missed opportunities and a lack of knowledge of books rights and licensing.
According to a recent survey commissioned here at IPR License (www.iprlicense.com), almost 50% of authors responded that were unsure if they own the world rights to their book. In addition, only 1 in 10 authors said that they had ever licensed their work to an overseas publisher. These worrying statistics go some way to explaining why such large amounts of potential income are going untapped. Not to mention the fact that far too many authors don’t understand the intricacies or merits of rights and licensing.
Rights licensing is licensing the rights to publish your work in different countries, languages and formats, as well as into movies and TV, media rights such as serialisations and readings, and new technology rights such as apps and so on. Last year, in professional publishing alone, licensing was said to be worth £1.5bn.
